123ducu/iStock (NEW YORK)– 2 car insurance giants announced they are returning a total of $800 million in premiums to clients throughout the novel coronavirus pandemic, stating individuals are driving less and they are experiencing less claims.

Allstate pledged to return $600 million to its clients amidst the COVID-19 break out, and American Household Insurance coverage said it would return $200 million.

Allstate called it a “Shelter-in-Place Repayment” program, stating most clients will receive 15% of their monthly premium in April and May. They can choose to receive the money through a credit to their savings account, credit card or in their Allstate account.

Tom Wilson, the president and CEO of Allstate, called the relocation “reasonable” as less people are driving amid government-mandated stay-at-home orders.

“This crisis is pervasive. Given an unmatched decline in driving, customers will get a Shelter-in-Place Repayment of more than $600 million over the next 2 months,” Wilson stated in a statement. “This is fair because less driving methods fewer accidents.”

American Family Insurance coverage said they will give consumers a one-time payment of $50 per vehicle that is covered by an American Family personal vehicle policy, and anticipates to print and distribute 2.3 million checks within the next 2 months.
