ASHEVILLE, NC (WLOS)– After both cops and the City of Asheville launched warnings during the week, demonstrators in downtown Asheville stayed non-violent throughout their demonstration on Saturday.
Confederate battle flags were mounted on the leading deck of the College Street parking garage in Asheville on Aug. 29.
“We wanted to fly our flag and say, ‘Hey, we are still here and we do not imply any damage whatsoever,” one member of the group stated.
The man, from South Carolina, becomes part of the ‘die-hard heritage fans’ who checked out downtown to hold a Confederate flag.
The so-called Grand Flagging of Asheville was prepared for by City board, which sent out a caution Friday afternoon, asking opposing groups to avoid conflict and the group.
Their declaration stated,
“We, as a Council, want to motivate residents to stay home, stay safe. The protesters will likely be bring weapons and have actually specified that they “plan to stay peaceful, unless threatened.” We know that so many in our community do not concur with this protest. As a Council we are dedicated to the work of eliminating oppressions and systematic bigotry, and this demonstration will not alter that. Please stay safe, do not engage. We do not want anyone to get harmed.
“We are attempting to safeguard what we have actually left, which is simply our statues of fantastic men, offered, yes they might have owned slaves but they were guys of their time which’s not fair,” the South Carolina male stated. “Similar to everybody else, you are a person of your time. What we do now may be evaluated in 200 years is primitive.”
The group migrated to Vance Monument where they were consulted with counter-protesters.
“I was expecting it to be a lot more aggressive or a lot bigger presence, especially in a liberal city like Asheville,” Lupe Ortiz said.
Ortiz stated she supports the Black Lives Matter motion and was shocked to see Confederate fight flags when she kept an eye out her hotel window this morning.
“My preliminary thoughts were, ‘Oh no,'” Ortiz stated.
The new Asheville local stated she was happily shocked to see the men holding the flags having discussions with counter-protesters about their beliefs.
“No one is arguing and I think it is actually cool since the more you know about things the more you can gain a truthful viewpoint,” Ortiz said.
The guys left the downtown location around 5:00 p.m Saturday night.
“We preserved total peace all freaking day and had conversations like this throughout the day,” the South Carolina male said. “They came out here to oppose us. Every one of them that has actually approached us and in fact talked with us, it’s been amazing. The discussions that we have actually had actually today have been gorgeous.”
The Asheville Cops Department stated they were keeping an eye on the downtown location throughout the day which no arrests had actually been made.
